TXHSFB Preview: Allen vs. Denton Guyer

Scout.com names players to watch in Friday's showdown of two-time defending Texas state champions: Allen vs. Denton Guyer.

Friday's season opener at the Tom Landry Classic at the University of North Texas' Apogee Stadium is about as big as a season-opening contest can get.

Two-time defending Class 5A Division I state champion Allen faces two-time defending Class 4A Division I state champion Denton Guyer in a showdown of two of the Lone Star State's strongest programs. Both teams reside in the new Class 6A, which came into existence following February realignment of the UIL, the state's governing body.

Here's a look at the names to know and players to watch in Friday night's matchup, which starts at 7:30 p.m. (rankings from Texas Associated Press):

No. 1 ALLEN EAGLES

Greg Little, 2016 5-star OT: Little is Scout's No. 1 player in Texas, No. 1 offensive tackle, and No. 3 overall recruit in the 2016 class. He committed earlier in the summer to Texas A&M.

Kyler Murray, 2015 4-star QB: Murray (pictured above) committed to Texas A&M in late May, choosing the Aggies over more than a dozen other offers. Murray is the No. 2 quarterback in the state's 2015 class behind only five-star Texas Tech commit Jarrett Stidham. Scout.com ranks Murray No. 5 among quarterbacks and No. 35 overall nationally in the 2015 class. Murray was an Elite 11 Finals participant in July.

Bobby Evans, 2015 4-star OT: Evans is committed to Oklahoma. Scout ranks him No. 6 at his position and No. 70 overall nationally.

Jaylon Jones, 2016 4-star CB: Jones, who primarily plays safety for Allen, already has seven offers. Scout ranks Jones No. 8 among cornerback and No. 94 overall nationally in the 2016 class.

Jalen Guyton, 2015 3-star WR: Guyton committed in late March to Notre Dame. Scout ranks Guyton as the nation's No. 47 receiver in his class.

Cody Wheeler, 2015 2-star OG: Wheeler committed in July to North Texas. He's 1 of 3 offensive line commits for the Mean Green.

Lee Morris, 2015 WR/TE: Morris is an under-the-radar prospect to watch for Allen. Offensive coordinator Jeff Fleener told Scout in June that schools have shown interest in Morris as an H-back.

No. 7 DENTON GUYER WILDCATS

Shawn Robinson, 2017 4-star QB: the 6-foot-2, 191-pound Robinson already holds offers from Nebraska and Texas, which signed the most recent Guyer starting quarterback, Jerrod Heard, in February. Those are big shoes to fill for Robinson, but last week, he became 1 of 85 recruits in the 2017 class to receive the first four-star grades from Scout.

Carl Thompson, 2015 3-star DT: Thompson committed to Kansas in late June, picking the Jayhawks over 13 other offers. Scout ranks Thompson as the No. 55 defensive tackle in the 2015 class.

Jordan Wallace, 2015 3-star S: Wallace committed to Iowa State in late June. Scout ranks Wallace as the nation's No. 114 safety in the 2015 recruiting cycle.

Alex Honey, 2015 3-star WR: Honey has picked up offers from Air Force and Texas State. Scout ranks the tall, lanky Honey No. 153 among the nation's 2015 receivers.

Derek Watson, 2015 2-star DE: Watson holds seven offers from Air Force, Connecticut, Louisiana-Monroe, Nevada, New Mexico, North Texas, and Texas State. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder could gain even more interest with a strong stretch to start the first few weeks of the season.

Anthony Taylor, 2015 2-star RB: Taylor committed committed in mid-July to Texas State.

Adam Scott, 2015 2-star WR: the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Scott holds offers from Colorado State and SMU.

NOTE: Nebraska 2015 three-star quarterback commit Kevin Dillman was recently ruled ineligible by the state's governing body for the 2014 season after moving to Guyer from California during the winter. While Dillman won't be able to play for Guyer's varsity, he will play for Guyer's junior varsity, according to BigRedReport.com.
