DFW Weekly Recruiting Notebook

2015 WR Kevin Thomas

Scout.com recaps the recruiting week of July 14-20 in the DFW Metrolex, which saw a half dozen commitments.

Recruiting action picked up in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex during the past week.

After a relatively slow start to July, the region experienced at least eight FBS commitments, starting Tuesday afternoon with the news of DeSoto 2015 receiver Kevin Thomas (pictured above) pledging to Kansas during an unofficial visit.

Thomas, who had 11 total offers, narrowed his list of finalists to Kansas, Clemson, and Indiana in late June before committing to the Jayhawks. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound three-star prospect caught 60 passes for 822 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior in 2013.

The action died down during the rest of the work week, but exploded Saturday with five commitments we tracked down within the Metroplex.

Allen 2015 offensive lineman Cody Wheeler announced his commitment to North Texas. The 6-foot-3, 272-pounder also had an offer from New Mexico. Wheeler helped Allen win its second consecutive state championship in 2013 and will be part of an elite high school offensive front his fall, when he'll team with 2015 left tackle Bobby Evans, a four-star Oklahoma commit, and 2016 right tackle Greg Little, a five-star Texas A&M commit.

Saturday also brought the news of a Tennessee double-dip in DFW.

The Volunteers hosted a slew of prospects an unofficial visits Saturday, resulting in several commitments, two of which came from Cedar Hill 2015 cornerback Darrell Miller and West Mesquite 2016 cornerback Bailey Phillips.

Miller, a three-star prospect, picked Tennessee over 14 other offers. The Volunteers won out over fellow finalists Boise State, Ohio State, and Purdue. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Miller will be part of a loaded Cedar Hill squad this fall that will attempt to defend a state crown of its own.

The 5-foot-7, 159-pound Phillips, a three-star prospect, picked Tennessee over nine other offers. Phillips already has a connection at Tennessee in defensive end Dimarya Mixon, a West Mesquite graduate who is also Phillips' cousin.

Also Saturday, Grapevine 2015 quarterback Sam Barry committed to Air Force, while Rockwall-Heath 2015 cornerback David Richardson committed to Tulsa. Sunday evening brought the news of an Arkansas State commitment from Mesquite 2015 offensive lineman Christian Castleberry, as well as a Louisiana Tech pledge from Irving MacArthur 2015 defensive end T.J. King.

DeSoto 2015 defensive tackle Bryce English said Saturday that he was going to announce his commitment Sunday afternoon, but delayed that another day and will announce Monday evening on local TV. English, a former Texas pledge, has four finalists: Arizona State, Arkansas, TCU, UCLA.

In offer news, Mesquite Poteet 2015 four-star athlete DeAndre McNeal got a new offer from Ole Miss. McNeal now holds more than 20 offers.

Frisco 2017 offensive lineman Jack Anderson reported a Wednesday offer from Arizona State. The promising young prospect already had offers from Texas Tech and UAB.

SoonersIllustrated.com reported early in the week that Burleson 2015 three-star defensive end Kenneth Mann picked up an Oklahoma offer. Mann has an offer list of about 20 schools.

HornedFrogBlitz.com reported a recent TCU offer for Keller Fossil Ridge 2015 safety Montrel Wilson, who is committed to Baylor. Wilson has eight FBS offers, including Arkansas and Illinois at the P5 level.
