NORMAN, Okla. -- Tonight Bob Stoops was asked about the possibility that he could take over for the much maligned Charlie Weis at Notre Dame, how did he respond?

The Notre Dame job is one of the most recognizable and highly desired positions in the coaching industry, so any coach would probably listen to the pitch if the Notre Dame Athletic Director called, but first there has to be a job opening.

With ND’s latest lost to Pittsburgh on Saturday the rumor mill in South Bend is working up a lather, and when Brian Hanley from the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Sunday that Stoops was interested in the taking the job should Weis be fired, that fervor touched down in Norman Oklahoma as fans speculated if Stoops would indeed spurn the crimson and cream for the gold and blue.

But on Monday night Stoops dispelled the rumors that he was showing an interest in the position, at least while Weis is still in place, while also saying the report in the Sun-Times was not accurate.

“That’s ridiculous, though, some confidant, huh," Stoops asked? "I have no idea what you’re talking about. Notre Dame doesn’t have a job, and I haven’t spoke to any confidants about anything outside of trying to beat Texas Tech, so, you guys, you know, that’s some guy making something up. I’m not answering stuff like that. There’s not even a job at Notre Dame, so that’s ridiculous. I don’t know. You guys believe [there’s a] confidant. What’s that?”

When asked about who his "confidant" was, Stoops said we should reach out to Hanley for the answers.

"You tell me," stated Stoops. "Ask that guy in Chicago."

Stoops, who is originally from Youngstown, Ohio, is 109-25 in his 10 years at OU. He has a 4-6 bowl record, has won six Big 12 Titles and one National Title. He was selected as the Walter Camp Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003.

Weis is 35-25 at Notre Dame since being hired prior to the ’05 season.
