Texas A&M entered Saturday’s game riding a two-game hot streak, but it only took about a minute and a half of actual game time before Oklahoma made it apparent that they were going to end that streak.
The Sooners took the opening possession right down the field and cashed it for seven points, a stat that they have now pulled off in nine-out-of ten games.
Oklahoma has now scored 50-plus points in six games this season. The only Sooners team with more 50-point games was the 2003 squad, with seven 50-point games.
"Coming in here is never easy and it never has been,” Bob Stoops aid after the game. “To put it all together and play as sound as we did is great. Running the ball as well as we did tonight made some other things open up. We missed a couple of opportunities in the first half but our overall performance was good. We were getting stops on defense and executing offensively.
With the loss Texas A&M fell to 4-6, its fifth season in the last seven years with at least six losses.
“They are a good team,” A&M head coach Mike Sherman informed. “And we didn't help ourselves. I thought they were the best team I'd seen on film going into this game, and they proved that to me today. Other than Cyrus' [Gray] 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, there weren't a lot of positives on A&M's side of the ledger.”
After the Texas loss the Sooners took a lot of heat for an inability to run the ball, but since then they have started to show that they are indeed a physical team. Saturday they rushed for an amazing 328 yards.
"Our offensive line did a great job opening holes and they gave me touches,” OU running back DeMarco Murray said. “I felt good today. I had a little more patience and I hit the hole hard. I watched a lot of film and evaluated myself. The past couple of games I felt really good. As a group, we did good but we still feel like we could do a lot better. I feel good about our fast-tempo offense."
The Sooners will need some help from the BCS to get in to the Big 12 Championship game, but they will also have to take care of their business and not lose coming down the stretch.
They have a bye week and then they have major tilts against Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
Stoops is hopeful that the bye week will provide some much needed rest.
“We are really banged up. It’s obvious we’re playing without some of our best players. It’s going to be good to rest up some of these players.”
