Last Week: The Sooners’ bid to play for its fourth conference
tournament title ended on Saturday in the bottom of the ninth to Texas in the
2008 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City … After OU
took a 10-8 lead in the top of the frame, the Longhorns scored three runs in
their final at-bat to advance to Sunday’s championship game where they
defeated Kansas State … Oklahoma began the tournament with a 4-1
win over the top seed, Texas A&M, on Wednesday and followed that with a dramatic
4-3 victory over Missouri in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday.
This Week: The Sooners will play in their 31st NCAA Tournament in the
Tempe Regional against Arizona State, Vanderbilt and Stony Brook … OU is
a three seed and will start the tournament against the No. 2 seed Vanderbilt
(40-20) on Friday, May 30 at 2 p.m. (MST) at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
… Each of the four-team, double-elimination regionals will be played May
30 - June 2 … The winners of each regional will advance to the super
regional round June 6-8.
Notes: According to Boydsworld.com, OU was ranked 41st
in the RPI released on Monday, May 26, 2008 … The Sooners recorded a
17-19-1 record against the top 50 teams in those standings … OU is 21-20
overall in the Big 12 Championship and 5-4 in pool play since it originated in
2006 ... For the second consecutive season, Oklahoma lost a one-run ball game
that would have sent them to the conference title game … In 2007, the
Sooners fell 7-6 to Baylor in a game sent the Bears to the championship game
… Sophomore right-hander Andrew Doyle was named to the 2008 Phillips 66
Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of
Sunday’s title game … Doyle’s complete game against Texas
A&M was the first of his career and the first by a Sooner across nine
innings since Stephen Porlier tossed one versus Nebraska on April 13, 2007
… Earlier this season, Michael Rocha lasted eight innings for a complete
game earlier this season against Tennessee … Doyle’s 12 strikeouts
also marked a season high for any Sooner and the most since Stephen Porlier
struck out the same amount of Texas A&M batters on March 23, 2007 …
Aljay Davis ended the season on a career high hitting streak at 13 games ...
Davis hit safely in 21 of the last 22 games with 34 hits.

SOFTBALL (47-14, 16-2 Big 12)
Last Week: Oklahoma’s season
came to an end last weekend as it lost to seventh-seeded Arizona in the Super
Regional in Tucson. The Wildcats took two out of three from the Sooners
to advance to the Women’s College Series. The Sooners dropped the
first game of the Super Regional, 3-1, on Friday night, but bounced back to
force a third and deciding game three after shutting out the Wildcats, 2-0, in
the second contest on Saturday. Arizona handed OU a 5-2 loss in the third
game on Saturday to end the Sooners season and advance to the Women’s
College World Series.
Notes: Oklahoma won its first Super Regional game in school
history when it topped Arizona, 2-0, on Saturday … Head coach Patty Gasso
recorded her 14th straight 40-win season and the 15th
consecutive in school history … The Sooners advanced to their third
Super Regional in the last four years … Oklahoma finished the Big
12 season with a 16-2 record marking the second best Big 12 record in school
history … The Sooners finished second in the Big 12 standings behind
regular season and postseason champion Texas A&M … Sophomore Amber
Flores set an OU single season record for walks with 45 … Oklahoma loses
four seniors in shortstop Savannah Long, outfielder Susan Ogden and pitchers
Jadyn Smith and Lauren Eckermann.

TRACK & FIELD
Last Week: The Oklahoma women's outdoor track and field
team has reached its highest position in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings released on Thursday by the
organization. Performances at the Big 12 Track & Field Championships
enabled six female Sooners to climb in individual event rankings to help OU
jump five spots in the rankings to No. 15.
This Week: OU heads to Lincoln, Neb., for the 2008
NCAA Midwest Regional, May 30-31. In 2007 the Oklahoma men claimed the
Midwest Regional team title while sending 14 men, a nation's best, to the 2007
NCAA Championships. Seven Sooner woman qualified for the national meet as well.
Notes: Five OU women are ranked in the top-10
nationally ... On the men's side, Boutte leads the way with a school-record and
nation's best jump of 54 feet and 4.75 inches (16.58 meters) in the triple
jump.

MEN’S GYMNASTICS
Last Week: Jonathan Horton finished
second in the all-around at the 2008 Visa U.S. Championships in Houston,
Texas. The finish landed Horton a spot in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials,
June 19-22, at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Five other
current and former Sooners competed at the Visa Championships including
freshman Steven Legendre, junior Chris Brooks and senior Taqiy
Abdullah-Simmons, as well as past letterwinners David and Jamie Henderson.
Notes: In finishing second in the all-around competition, Horton earned top-10
finishes on four of six events including second place on rings with a two-day
total of 31.850 and third on floor (30.800). The Houston native was also
fifth on vault (32.050) and sixth on parallel bars (30.300) … Legendre
was the runner-up to 2004 Olympian Morgan Hamm on floor (31.300) and also
placed sixth on vault (31.950), while Brooks was sixth on floor (30.100) and
Abdullah-Simmons finished eighth on rings (30.050). Jamie Henderson also
earned a top-10 finish, placing ninth on the p-bars (30.050) …
Abdullah-Simmons finished 16th in the all-around standings (170.600)
in his first competition on all six events since claiming the 2007 NCAA
all-around title. The Philadelphia, Pa., native battled knee and shoulder
injuries throughout the 2008 season … SoonerSports.com has launched a
“Jonathan Horton: Bound for Beijing” page to chronicle his attempt
to make the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.
