Nichol Decides on Transfer

Keith Nichol has decided that his best option for him at this point in time would be to go ahead and cut his ties with the Oklahoma Sooners and search for a new destination to finish out his college career, and today he announced his public intentions to transfer.

Keith Nichol, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback was one of the most highly recruited quarterbacks in the country at the time he gave a verbal commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners back in late November of 2006.

At the time of his announcement it looked like he would enroll in college early (January) and have the chance to compete for a starting spot right off of the bat, but heading in to the fall he found himself behind fellow freshman Sam Bradford, who would lead the nation in passing efficiency, and incumbent back-up Joey Halzle.

With Bradford establishing a firm grip on the starting job and Halzle clearly cemented in as the number two guy behind him it looked bleak that Nichol would get a lot of snaps over the next year.

Despite the way the depth chart had worked itself out it still appeared at one point in time earlier in the spring that Nichol would indeed try to ride it out at OU.

“I’m not backing down. I would never back down just because someone had a good year,” Nichol said earlier this spring. “I’m still doing the same thing now as I did the first day I came on campus. I’m still here to go out and compete and win the starting spot.”

“It’s just from a selfish standpoint that I would get disappointed. I’m really proud of the team, the way we played. It was mixed emotions I guess, but overall I was happy.”

The final nail in the coffin for Nichol at OU may have been the signing of four-star prospect Landry Jones, who despite not knowing the play book or assignments all too well was still able to prove in is short time in the program that he has the potential to be something special.

In the end it was just a better move for Keith Nichol to make a change and put himself in a better situation to play.

No favorites for Nichol’s likely destination have been announced.
