Griffin Earns 3rd Conference Honor of Season

Oklahoma's Blake Griffin was named conference player of the week for the second time this season after his performance in the Sooners' win at Baylor on Saturday. Griffin made a surprise return to the court just 12 days after injuring his knee against Kansas.

Blake Griffin wasn’t bad – at least for someone not expected to play.

The University of Oklahoma freshman forward was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. He earned the honor for his 17-point, 15-rebound performance last Saturday in the Sooners’ win at No. 25 Baylor.

Making the performance even more impressive was that Griffin wasn’t even expected to play. The 6-foot-10 Griffin had injured his knee (sprained medial collateral ligament) less than two weeks before at Kansas and was expected to miss about four weeks of action.

Griffin scored 15 of his points in the second half, including nine of the team’s last 12 as Oklahoma held off the late-charging Bears. Griffin, who came off the bench and played only 22 minutes, recorded his seventh double-double of the season.

Griffin shared the honor this week with Baylor guard Curtis Jerrells.

Griffin also earned Big XII Rookie of the Week honors on Jan. 14.
