NORMAN – Domination was personified Sunday afternoon in Lloyd Noble Center.
Oklahoma’s women played host to Arkansas State and got little more than a glorified scrimmage in a 93-36 victory.
“When we weren't turning it over, we executed so much better than we did against North Texas,” said Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale, whose team moved to 4-2 and won its fourth straight game. “We got things that we wanted, we looked organized and our spacing was better."
The Sooners made a believer out of at least one person with their performance.
“Give all the credit to Oklahoma,” Arkansas State Brian Boyer said. “You hear a lot about them and the rankings and all of that, and when you finally get to see them in person, you realize just how good they are.”
The Sooners dominated the game inside, led by Courtney Paris’ 22 points and 15 rebounds. Oklahoma outscored Arkansas State 50-6 in the paint.
"We can't match up with them,” Boyer said. “I mean, even if you pack things in with them, they can still just throw it up over your head.”
Outside, it was Jenna Plumley doing the damage.
The sophomore point guard had 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. She added three assists and three steals.
She also had three turnovers.
“There were way too many turnovers for a kid as talented as her, way too many turnovers for our point guard,” Coale said.
The Sooner coach did note some improvement elsewhere, though.
“But you have to guard her and the first three games of the year she didn't shoot it very well from the perimeter. I think everybody understands that you have to guard her and if you don't she'll make you pay.”
Coale was disappointed in one stat – Oklahoma’s 25 turnovers.
“I know the turnover column looks hideous again; it does have to change if we're going to do what we want to do this year,” Coale said.
But it didn’t matter. Said Boyer: “I think we needed to create about 70 to have a chance."
It’s not like Arkansas State is a punchless team. The Indians fell to 4-4 and have a win this season over Alabama.
Nyeshai Stevenson added 17 points for Oklahoma, matching her career high. She made two 3-pointers.
Ashley Paris added 12 points for the Sooners.
Oklahoma shot 57.1 percent from the field while holding Arkansas State to 21.1 percent.
Every other statistical category was dominated by OU as well, including out-rebounding the Indians 58-22.
Already leading 47-18 at halftime, Oklahoma started the second half with a 13-0 run for a 60-18 lead.
