Wild finish propels Sooners past Cowboys, 9-8

Oklahoma City — There wasn't a football on the field at the Bricktown Ballpark on Friday night, but that didn't prevent a little Sooner Magic from finding its way down I-35 from Norman.

Trailing 8-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Sooners (34-23)found a way to score seven runs over the last two innings and knock off Oklahoma State (38-18) in a thrilling, come-from-behind 9-8 victory.

With the win, the Sooners (34-23) improved to 2-0 in Big 12 Tournament play and can advance to Sunday's championship game with a win over Baylor Saturday night.

"We really feel like what happened tonight could be a sign of destiny for us," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "But we've got to go out and take care of business against a really good Baylor club that's playing really well right now, and a coach that I have tremendous respect for in Steve Smith."

Oklahoma State led 8-4 going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Sooners would rally and score all five runs with two outs. Aaron Baker's RBI single made the score 8-5, and a two-RBI double by Joseph Hughes cut the lead to 8-7.

With Baker already on third and Hughes on second, OU's next batter, Mike Gosse, walked to load the bases. And that's when things got crazy as OSU pitcher Jordy Mercer, facing pinch hitter Brandon Moss, threw two wild pitches which allowed the Sooners to score the tying run, by Baker, and winning run, by Hughes who advanced to third on the first wild pitch, and complete the shocking win.

Lefthander Chris Henry (2-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings in relief. Credit also has to go out to starter Stephen Porlier, who gave up three first inning runs but battled to shutout the Cowboys over the next five innings until giving up one run in the seventh.

It was the largest come-from-behind win of the year for Oklahoma, and the first time in 21 games this season they won when trailing after eight innings. OU also improved to 8-0 all-time against OSU in Big 12 Tournament play.

First pitch for Saturday night's OU-Baylor showdown for a trip to the title game is set for 8 p.m. at the Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
