It's almost inevitable. John Roberson is going to wind up being extremely highly regarded by high…
Could Roberson be Capel's next commitment?
Plano, Texas rising junior guard John Roberson goes one-on-one with OUInsider.com about this recent trip to Norman. JH: So how did you get to Plano, Texas? JR: "We moved in from Florida. I played my high school basketball at Lake Howell High. Things couldn't have worked out for me at Plano winning the state title and everything." JH: How did your unofficial visit to OU go yesterday? JR: "I liked it a lot. They showed me all around the campus and I really like it." JH: Did you commit to OU? JR: "I am considering it a lot. The only thing that is stopping me right now is that my mom wants to see the campus. She wasn't with me yesterday, I was with my high school coach." JH: What schools are you considering right now? JR: "I am considering Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Utah, Arizona and SMU." JH: What is it about Oklahoma that you like so much? JR: "It is Coach Capel. I really like him. OU also has great facilities and everything. They have it first class. They have everything that can help you be the best that you can be." JH: What do you like about Coach Capel? JR: "Coach Capel tells you the truth, and he is young. I don't have to worry about him leaving, because he is going to be at OU for a long while. When I talked to Nate Carter, he was telling me how much everybody on the team just loves him. He is also a point guard and that is a big plus for me. The fact that he has played the position so well and played for a great team in Duke will be a big benefit for me." JH: So what do two point guards talk about when they are together? Is the conversation a little different than when a point guard and center get together to talk? JR: "We didn't talk about basketball much when I was there. He was just cool to hang out with and I could tell he was a great family guy. We did talk about the recruiting process a little bit. He gave me some advice on recruiting." JH: When will you and your mom make it up back to Norman? JR: "I am going to take my ACT test in August, and it will be sometime after that. My mom will come up with me on my official visit to OU sometime in September or early fall." JH: You had a great first year at Plano, didn't you? JR: "We won the Class 5A Championship. It was Plano High's first state (men) basketball championship. I had a good season. I averaged 17.5 points, 7.5 assists and four rebounds per game." JH: You played pretty well at Lake Howell as well, didn't you? JR: "I started as a freshman and went to the Class 5A (six classes in Florida) state championship game where we finished second. I averaged 13 points per game that season. Then during my sophomore year, I averaged about 14 points and we went to the Final Four again and lost in the semifinals to the same team." JH: How good is Plano High going to be next season? JR: "We lost a lot of seniors off our last year's team. I am the only starter back from last year's team, but we have a lot of young guys moving up that are good players. We are going to be pretty good again." JH: How would you describe your style of play? JR: "I like to run and play in an up-tempo offense. I am very good at spotting my teammates, and I am real good at scoring. I would rather set up my teammates than score. I think I am at my best in the open court and working in transition. We run a bunch of screens and I got very good at coming off ball screens and working off of them. In the beginning of the year I didn't have a mid-range jumper, but by the end and teams started working to stop my three-point jumper so I started to adapt my game. Now I have a good mid-range and I shot 48 percent from 3-point range." JH: Who are you playing for this summer in AAU ball? JR: "I play for South 40 Heat. They play out of Miami. There are rules in the state of Texas, which say that I can play for any team that doesn't border the state of Texas, and I didn't know that until recently. So I am trying to get on the Athlete's First Team out of Oklahoma. If that doesn't work out, then I am going to play for the Texas Blue Chips, who play out of Dallas." JH: How would you classify your recruiting status with OU at this point? JR: "I am a heavy lean to OU right now."
