RECRUITING: Fort Worth safety a Texas lock?
Bobby Tatum was one of the top players in the state of Texas a year and now he has to make room for his little brother Brandon Tatum, who some say will be better in the long run.
Brandon played outside linebacker as a sophomore before moving to corner and free safety a year ago. Once he moved to safety he teamed with this brother to form one of the top safety combinations in high school football.
"It was fun to play with Bobby, who is basically my motivation," said Brandon. "He works so hard. I just tried to do what he did and we tried to top each other. When he made a good play I tried to make a better one, and we did that all season."
Brandon finished with two interceptions and with around 40 solo tackles on the year. Tatum will start at free safety this year and he may play a little running back as well. He can bench 315 pounds, squats 495 and he posted a 40-inch vertical jump.
Tatum participated in the All-American combine in San Antonio and the Nike combine at Texas A&M.
"I did pretty well, but I didn't do was well as I wanted to," said Brandon. "I ended up having the highest vertical jump, but our 40's ended up getting rained out. I finished with 21 reps at 185 pounds on the bench and I ran a 4.18 on the shuttle."
Brandon has received three offers from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma State, but he knows more are on the way.
"My top five schools are Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, LSU and Oklahoma State," said Brandon. "My dad says he is going to rent us a car this summer for a week or so that we can make it up to as many of my top schools as possible and go their camps. That way I can get some camp work in, but also do an unofficial visit at the same time.
"Texas has a pretty good start because my brother is there and I already know so much about them. Since I do have so much knowledge about them they are my No. 1, but I want to see what the other schools have to offer on my visits. I am not a lock for Texas and I do want to make a decision for myself.
"Oklahoma is a school that I think very highly of. I know I like the tradition and the fact they are winning so many games."
Tatum is also on the track team and participated in the long jump (21'8 ) and TJ (44.11).
