SoonersIllustrated.com is going to set the stage every week breaking down Oklahoma’s game during the 2014 season.
Louisiana Tech (0-0) at No. 4 OU (0-0)
When: 6 p.m. CST
OU’s biggest question going into the game
Time for talking is over with. How will the Sooners handle the lofty expectations? It has been nearly eight months since that magical night in New Orleans but this is a much different team than the one that trucked Alabama.
OU quarterback Trevor Knight is going to have to show the consistency needed for the Sooners to remain a player for a spot in the college football playoff. And he’s going to have to do so not knowing what he has at running back with Alex Ross and Keith Ford.
Even if the offense stumbles out of the gate, the belief is the defense and its nine returning starters will be able to take care of business.
La Tech’s biggest question going into the game
For Louisiana Tech, it’s simple – how can you make OU sweat? The Sooners don’t always fare so well when expectations are at their highest.
This season is one of those times. If La Tech is fundamentally sound and can make a few plays early, will it be able to rattle the heavily favored Sooners?
On paper, La Tech is horribly overmatched and durability will be something to watch in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
“You will watch it unfold. For us that is a major issue. You are correct, guys like Brennan Clay you can put in a situation when you really needed someone to come through for you. He came through for us more than he didn’t by a long shot. Other times when you get a guy who is dropping the ball all over the field and the other team is getting it, people act like ‘give him another chance, don’t worry about it’ because they aren’t talking about you the next day and or losing the game. It is important and that takes time.” – OU coach Bob Stoops on gaining trust
Slowly but surely started to hear more and more about why Ahmad Thomas is going to be such beast moving forward for the Sooners. He’ll make his first career start Saturday, and he’s going to make sure it won’t be his last one. Thomas won’t have sparkling numbers, but he’s a sure tackler and will make at least one big play in the opener.
OU 34, La Tech 13. The defense will carry the day for the Sooners as the offense is going to have to find its footing in the first couple of games. A solid day by Trevor Knight as he gets more comfortable with the weapons at his disposal. Defense creates two turnovers in the first half to put this one in the bag nice and early.
