Thomas named backup quarterback

Oklahoma QB earns spot behind Trevor Knight in Sooners' offense

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops chose not to answer the first question and the most pressing issue for the Sooners on Monday.

He declined to further comment on Joe Mixon’s situation, which included a year-long suspension for the five-star freshman running back.

Stoops did disclose the beginning of the depth chart at quarterback.

“In all likelihood, it’ll be Cody Thomas,” Stoops said. “Then, the Baker Mayfield situation will enter in to that whenever that decision is made.”

That’s not the most confident statement in favor of Thomas, a redshirt freshman with under-rated athleticism, but it’s a statement nonetheless.

Mayfield has the obvious credentials after winning Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors last season with Texas Tech, but he is currently ineligible to play after the Red Raiders blocked the walk-on’s transfer request.

Mayfield is currently appealing to the NCAA that he must sit out a year before competing for Oklahoma.

For now, Thomas is the guy if Knight goes down.

“Cody has done some positive things,” said Heupel adding that Thomas has changed his body physical and has a better understanding mentally of defenses. “I like where he’s headed.”

Heupel said that Thomas also has been more sound and consistent within the offense than he was as a freshman. He also said that Thomas has more athleticism than “people give him credit for.”

“All those quarterback go through a great growth pattern in their freshman year,” he said.

The fourth quarterback on the roster, Justice Hansen, was an early enrollee at Oklahoma, giving him an immeasurable head start on understanding the offense.
