Sunderland returns to OU

Scout 300 prospect Will Sunderland was back at Oklahoma over the weekend.

There was nothing new for Midwest City (Okla.) High safety Will Sunderland to see at Oklahoma. As many times as he has been there, he knows what’s up in Norman.

But that didn’t stop the Scout 300 prospect from once again making the short trip to OU yet again Saturday to watch practice and hang out with the players and coaches.

“Like I’ve said, I’m real cool with the coaches and love the relationship I have with all of those guys,” Sunderland said. “I wanted to be around the players more and talk to them.

“For me, no matter what, it’s always a special moment to show up on OU’s campus.”

Sunderland was offered by OU nearly 12 months ago but has said repeatedly he is going to take his time before making any sort of decision. Right now he has two official visits set up.

The first will be in Norman when OU plays Tennessee on Sept. 13 weekend. The next will be at Ohio State when the Buckeyes welcome Michigan to town.

It’s clear OU and Ohio State are the top two schools right now, and he said no new schools have entered the picture in the last couple of months.

Though Sunderland has seen so much from OU, the visit still meant a lot to him, he said, because of the attitude of the players.

“The players have so much respect for the coaches,” Sunderland said. “You can see how much they listen to what they’re saying and how they understand it all.”

Sunderland made a little noise with a tweet saying he was hanging around OU freshman running back Joe Mixon. Mixon is being held out of all team activities until the investigation into his alleged assault is complete.

Sunderland got to know Mixon through multiple recruiting trips in the last year, and he said he saw no difference at all with his friend.

“No, sir, he wasn't any different,” Sunderland said. “He was just missing his squad. He wants to practice so bad. Every 10 minutes he'd be like 'I'm ready to get back on the field.'"

Nothing has been decided with Mixon’s case, but Sunderland is ready to get back on the field as well as high school practices start in the next couple of weeks.

“I’m bigger and I’m more aggressive,” Sunderland said. “I’m definitely ready to show everybody what I can do.”
