OU's Hield invited to LeBron James camp

Rising junior has chance to shine among country's best players

Buddy Hield was a second-team All-Big 12 performer last year, and on Wednesday, he’ll be going to his second major collegiate camp in less than three weeks.

The junior wing competed at the Kevin Durant Skills Academy in late June and will leave Wednesday for the LeBron James Skills Academy after a successful performance at the three-day event.

The event, which is reserved for the top players in college and high school basketball, will be held in Las Vegas through Saturday. Hield averaged a team-high 16.5 points per game and made a conference-high 63 3-pointers in Big 12 play as a sophomore.

"At LeBron's camp, you play against the best players in the country, not just the best wings,” Hield said in a release by the school after citing a rigid structure of the Kevin Durant camp. “You have to go in there and compete against everyone at every position. It's going to be more free than it was at KD's camp. I know there are a few other guys from the Big 12 going, and I'm looking forward to competing with them."

Iowa State junior Georges Niang, Kansas junior Perry Ellis and freshman Kelly Oubre, Kansas State sophomore Marcus Foster and West Virginia senior Juwan Staten round out the other Big 12 competitors at the LeBron James skills camp, where approximately 110 basketball players will be participating in skills workouts and 5-on-5 games.

Playing against some of the better players in the country will no doubt help Hield continue to grow as a leader of the Sooners. Oklahoma will try and build off an NCAA Tournament appearance last year, which ended in a first-round, overtime upset against North Dakota State.

The Sooners averaged more than 82 points per game last season under Lon Kruger, finishing with the seventh-most productive offense in the country. Hield’s improvement and growth will be key for a team that returns four of its top five scorers, all of which were underclassmen last season.
