Now into the top 10, the choices get tougher as Sooners Illustrated continues to count down the top 20 plays of OU's 2013 season.

Before we look ahead to what should be a heavily anticipated 2014 season for Oklahoma, one last reflection at the 2013 Sooners that went 11-2 and won the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Sooners Illustrated is doing a countdown of the top 20 plays of OU’s season after looking back at the “OU Film Review” series that ran on SoonersIllustrated.com following every game. Here are plays No. 5-8.

Play No. 8: Bester-to-Shepard

The game: OU 34, Kansas 19

Key players: WR LaColtan Bester, WR Sterling Shepard

The only obvious play, right? Of course this had to be included. On the first play from scrimmage after the safety, OU went into its bag of tricks with a reverse pass.

OU wide receivers coach Jay Norvell gave Sterling Shepard a lot of credit for selling the play early and not giving it away.

LaColtan Bester threw a beautiful deep ball, arguably the best long pass thrown by the Sooners this season. He caught Shepard in stride for the 49-yard score.

Play No. 7: Déjà vu for Saunders

The game: OU 33, Oklahoma State 24

Key players: WR Jalen Saunders

OU wide receiver Jalen Saunders set Norman on fire with an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter in last year’s Bedlam.

He did it a little earlier this time around. With OU down 7-0, Saunders took a punt 64 yards for a touchdown to ignite the spark for the Sooners.

It was a nice return by Saunders, who patiently waited for the first wave of defenders to leave. After that, he busted it toward the sideline and nobody was going to catch him.

Play No. 6: Clay takes it to the house

The game: OU 20, TCU 17

Key players: RB Brennan Clay

OU needed a big play, and senior running back Brennan Clay came through with a 76-yard touchdown run to give OU a 20-10 lead with five minutes left in the game.

The play was designed to go left, but Clay saw the hole to the right and made the cutback. Clay’s not the fastest, but he outran everybody into the end zone.

“I was looking at the jumbo tron to see what was happening,” Clay said. “I saw Jalen Saunders chasing me but that was it.”

Clay finished with 111 yards on nine attempts.

Play No. 5: Bothun to Hunnicutt

The game: OU 33, Oklahoma State 24

Key players: K Michael Hunnicutt, Holder Grant Bothun

The play that woke everybody up. Before the play was already getting ready to tweet “Hunnicutt makes chip shot FG.” And then, you know, actually watched the play.

Holder Grant Bothun caught the apparent field goal attempt. Rolled out and had three options. He could run it, throw it to Taylor McNamara in the corner of the end zone or find Michael Hunnicutt and let him try to score.

Bothun gave Hunnicutt his moment as he caught, took a nice hit but held on for the 8-yard touchdown to tie it at 17-17.

Stoops had used the play before and wanted to go to it again.

“I was so pumped this week when he came into my office on Thursday and recognized a fake that he had run earlier in his career,” special teams coach Jay Boulware said. “He was just on it.”
