Tendency is to think of a bowl game as a reward for a job well done during the season. OU is certainly not looking at it that way.

Not many people expected Oklahoma to make a BCS bowl game and even fewer people right now are giving the Sooners much of a chance of victory.

OU, ranked No. 11, takes on third-ranked Alabama in the 2014 AllState Sugar Bowl on Thursday Night in New Orleans. And the players are making it clear they’re not just happy to be here.

“This is a 100 percent business trip,” senior cornerback Aaron Colvin said. “Yes it’s nice we made it to New Orleans. It’s a beautiful city, but at the same time, we came here to finish business. That’s part of why I came back for my senior year to finish business.”

Going to a bowl game can be challenging in terms of maintaining discipline, but the Sooners wouldn’t be where they are now without the discipline and leadership from their seniors and coach Bob Stoops.

Following the first few days in New Orleans, it’s clear the fun and games are over. It’s time to get to work.

“We’re going to be able to have some fun, but we need to make sure that everyone knows that we’re here for one reason and that’s to win a football game,” senior captain Gabe Ikard said.

And with leadership from guys like Ikard and Colvin, it’s one reason why Stoops isn’t all that concerned.

“I trust their character,” Stoops said. “Not just this year – we haven’t been a team that has had a lot of trouble so in the end, I trust them like I always do.”
