Reports surfaced Wednesday that Trevor Knight will be OU's starting quarterback this weekend. Blake Bell is out with a concussion.

Trevor Knight is going to get a second chance to make a first impression. The Oklahoma redshirt freshman quarterback will start Saturday at Kansas State, reports indicated Wednesday.

The story, first reported by NewsOK.com, is junior quarterback Blake Bell is out with a concussion and will not be available to play, allowing Knight the opportunity to start.

Knight started the first two games of the season before an injury saw Bell replace him. Bell has been the starter the rest of the season since that point.

Bell was injured early in the second quarter of OU’s 48-10 win last week against Iowa State after taking a big hit on a scramble run. He was in for two more plays before he was removed and his helmet was taken away from him.

OU coach Bob Stoops said Monday he would not say anything regarding the quarterback situation until Saturday, stating “it does us no possible good to define all of that today or Friday,” Stoops said.

Knight didn’t have a banner day throwing the ball, but he did rush for 123 yards and a touchdown and his dual-threat ability was key in helping the Sooners to a 405-yard rushing day against the Cyclones.

Sophomore Kendal Thompson will back up Knight at KSU. Thompson orchestrated a 90-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter last week, culminating with a three-yard touchdown pass. If anything should happen to Thompson, freshman Cody Thomas will be available as well.

The quarterback situation isn’t the only thing making waves Wednesday morning as sources close to the team have confirmed senior running back Damien Williams is suspended for Saturday’s game.

Williams rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns last week on senior day but this will be his second one-game suspension of the season.

Williams also had to miss OU’s game against Tulsa for an undisclosed reason. Williams is second on the team with 553 rushing yards with a team-high seven touchdowns.

With Williams out, it should allow for more opportunities for seniors Brennan Clay and Roy Finch and potentially more carries for redshirt freshman Alex Ross.
