With Oklahoma on a bye week and one-third of the season left, SoonersIllustrated.com asked its readers to decide what is the best play of OU’s season to this point?
The choices were:
*Striker and Nelson combine for TD at Notre Dame
*Bell-to-Shepard seals ND victory
*Clay ices TCU game with long TD run
*Bester’s TD pass to Shepard at Kansas
*Bell’s 76-yard TD pass to Saunders vs. Texas Tech
And the results were:
5 votes – Other. Most likely the choice that was selected here was LaColtan Bester’s crazy touchdown run against Tech. A couple of readers brought it up in the discussion so it would make sense.
5 votes – Bell-to-Shepard seals ND victory. OU was up 27-21 early in the fourth quarter in South Bend and needed a spark. Boy did the Sooners ever find one on a short third-and-three pass from Blake Bell to Sterling Shepard. Picked up the first down and then some en route to a 54-yard touchdown connection. Shepard would catch the two-point conversion as well and the Sooners went to 4-0 with a 35-21 win at Notre Dame.
10 votes – Bell’s 76-yard TD pass to Saunders. For the last three weeks, media and fans alike were asking when was OU going to hit the deep ball and get some chunk yardage. With the game tied 7-7 in the second quarter, the Sooners finally struck big. Bell threw the perfect pass as Saunders never broke stride in racing for his second touchdown of the game. OU has relied on its short passing game for the most part with Bell. If he can be as accurate on the deep ball as he was with this one, it adds another dimension to OU’s offense. The Sooners won 38-30.
11 votes – Clay ices TCU game with 76-yard TD run. OU was beating the Horned Frogs 13-0 at halftime but was stumbling throughout the second half. Now up just 13-10 with less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Clay struck big. The only question was whether he would get caught. Clay said he looked on the jumbo tron and saw only Jalen Saunders so he knew he was in a good position. OU won 20-17 to improve to 5-0.
15 votes – Bester’s TD pass to Shepard. OU was down 13-0 to Kansas in the second quarter. Yes, KU. With the score 13-8, OU went into its bag of tricks. A reverse to LaColtan Bester wasn’t a reverse at all as he found Sterling Shepard perfectly in stride for a 49-yard touchdown that gave OU the lead for good in a 34-19 victory. The Sooners needed a spark, and Bester and Shepard did just that. OU wide receivers coach Jay Norvell said Bester had never thrown that pass as well in practice as he did that day. Hey, that’s all that matters.
And OU’s best play of the season is…
33 votes – Striker and Nelson combine for TD at Notre Dame. The Irish wanted to test the OU passing defense early. On the third play from scrimmage, they learned that was a bad idea. Eric Striker came off the edge and hammered ND quarterback Tommy Rees from behind and the ball fluttered into the arms of Corey Nelson. From there, Nelson cruised into the end zone to give OU a 7-0 lead in the first minute of the game. Linebackers were non-existent during the latter half of 2012, but this group has been vital this season. No play encapsulates that better than Striker striking and Nelson scoring.
