Tennessee is going to visit Oklahoma for the first time ever next season as the Volunteers’ trip to Norman highlights OU’s non-conference schedule for 2014.
OU officially announced its non-conference slate for next season. The Sooners will begin at home against Louisiana Tech on Aug. 30. Then welcome the Vols on Sept. 13 before playing at Tulsa on Sept. 20.
The regular season tilt between OU and Tennessee will be the first one between the two schools. OU has only played Tennessee twice, in the 1968 Orange Bowl and the 1939 Orange Bowl.
“We have always strived to feature marquee non-conference opponents on the Oklahoma scheduled,” athletic director Joe Castiglione said in a press release. “Our longtime philosophy of scheduling high-caliber FBS opponents becomes even more important in 2014 with strength of schedule factoring into the College Football Playoff equation.”
OU will return the favor and play at Tennessee in 2015.
OU opens with La Tech, and it will be the first meeting between the Sooners and Bulldogs. OU will travel to Tulsa for the first time since 2007.
“We are excited to continue our in-state series with Tulsa as a way to acknowledge our appreciation for the tremendous support from our fans in that area of Oklahoma,” Castiglione said.
