Sooners salvage Bedlam series with 5-4 win

OU designated hitter Kolbey Carpenter

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Sooners are still breathing in the Big 12 race, barely.

They salvaged the Bedlam Series with a 5-4 rubber match victory over Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark and kept a chance to win the league with a sweep next weekend at Kansas State.

Considering recent days, too, it was in unlikely fashion that they came back on this day.

OU fell to an early 4-0 deficit in the first three innings after OSU scored a pair of runs in the second and third.

But the Sooners wasted no time coming back.

They put together a three-run fourth, which featured center fielder Craig Aikin racing home on a wild pitch in addition to an RBI double off the hot bat of second baseman Hector Lorenzana and RBI single by designated hitter Kolbey Carpenter.

OU's come-from-behind resiliency continued in the sixth when Carpenter again singled a runner home and third baseman Garrett Carey bounced into a double play, but plated the go-ahead run in first baseman Matt Oberste.

From there, the bullpen did the rest, with a little fortune.

When it appeared OSU designated hitter Aaron Cornell, who stole third, would race home and tie the game on a wild pitch off Sooner closer Jacob Evans, catcher Anthony Hermelyn chased it down at the backstop and fired to Evans for the bang-bang putout at the plate.

Evans then worked a scoreless ninth.

While that was some good fortune, OU had more of it earlier in the game.

Off a single to right, OU's Max White gunned down OSU's Zach Fish for a huge out that kept it a one-run deficit at the time.

That came off OU reliever Ralph Garza, who settled down and picked up his fourth victory to no losses.

The Sooners will welcome more good fortune as well as an opportunity, albeit a miniscule one, to win the conference when they head to Kansas State for a three-game set next Friday.

Before that, though, they get back to action with their final home contest of the regular season at 7 p.m. CT Tuesday against Dallas Baptist.
