Sooners claim Big 12 Title

OU pitcher Michelle Gascoigne

NORMAN, Okla. — Put a check mark next to OU's first major 2013 goal: the Sooners are Big 12 Champions for the 10th time in program history, capturing their sixth regular season crown with a 4-0 Bedlam victory over Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at Marita Hynes Field.

Michelle Gascoigne struck out eight in six innings and Keilani Ricketts pitched a scoreless seventh in a Senior Day combined complete game shutout they'll never forget.

Fellow senior Brianna Turang also came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, capping off the scoring at the time.

Somewhat surprisingly, the only senior to not make a visible contribution in the stat sheet—though she had nine putouts behind the dish—was catcher Jessica Shults, who finished 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts.

But she's been so critical throughout this year and the rest of her career that that might as well be forgotten.

As she's done all season, though, underclassman Lauren Chamberlain, too, added some offense with her two-run double to left in the fourth.

That was part of a 2-for-4 performance and made it 3-0 at the time.

OU got on the board in the first when third baseman Shelby Pendley smashed an RBI double to left.

The Sooners (46-4, 14-2 Big 12) will look to complete the sweep and head into postseason play with a three-game winning streak when the two conclude the three-game set at 1 p.m. CT Sunday in Stillwater.
