Signing as a Sooner: No. 14

2013 OU safety signee Hatari Byrd

NORMAN, Okla. — OU's most elite safety comes in here, leaving just four outstanding signatures.

Signing Time: 9:17 a.m.

Scout.com Ranking: Four-star

Signee: Hatari Byrd (S—6'2"/200)—Here is one of OU's most prized defensive commits. Byrd, continuing OU's recent Cali surge out of Central High East Campus, could very easily come in and remind the Sooner faithful of Tony Jefferson immediately. He's a physical, hard-hitting safety who punishes backs in the running game when in run support. But Byrd also has nice cover skills as well.

What he's coming into at the position:It's not out of question that Byrd could sneak in and start in his first season. With Jefferson and also strong safety Javon Harris both gone, there are two spots and any combination of Byrd, Quentin Hayes, Zack Sanchez, Julian Wilson and Gabe Lynn is expected to fill those. Hayes likely has the leg up in one spot, and it might be Byrd in the other. Regardless, he's going to play as a freshman.
