You had to expect Kansas guard Ben McLemore was going to be recognized after a superb week.

You had to expect Kansas guard Ben McLemore was going to be recognized after a superb week.

On Monday, McLemore was fittingly selected as the Big 12 Player of the Week, after leading the Jayhawks to two wins and saving the day in the first one, last Wednesday night against Iowa State.

Against the Cyclones, McLemore’s desperation three banked in with 1.3 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, where behind his 33 points and six of six shooting from three point range, Kansas would prevail 97-89.

For the week, McLemore averaged 21.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game. He ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring with 16.4 points per game.

The award is the first Player of the Week honor for McLemore this season. He was also selected as Rookie of the Week in December.

He’s the second Jayhawk in Big 12 history to win both honors, joining former guard Mario Chalmers, who accomplished the feat during the 2005-2006 season.
