Texas Tech defeated Jackson State 84-75 on Monday night
inside the United Spirit Arena to improve to 4-0, while the Tigers fell to 0-3
Tech interim head coach Chris Walker becomes just the second
coach in Red Raider basketball history to begin his tenure with a 4-0 mark
The Red Raiders scored just 84 points on Monday, snapping a
three-game streak where Tech had scored 89 or more points each time out on the
floor
Tech was trailing Jackson State 33-30 at the half, marking
the first time this season the Red Raiders had trailed at the half
Entering the game freshman Josh Gray was the first freshman
since 1972 to score at least 10 points in his first three collegiate games and
on against Jackson State he extended that streak to four as he scored 12
points, shooting 4-for-17 from the field
Jaye Crockett for the third-straight game reached double
digits, scoring 20 points against Jackson State, also marking the second time
in the last three games for him to eclipse the 20-point mark
Crockett finished the game with just eight rebounds,
finishing just two shy of yet another double-double, which would be his
third-straight this season. Entering the game the back-to-back double-doubles
marked the first by a Red Raider since Mike Singletary did it back in 2010
Four Red Raiders finished in double-digits in scoring, Gray
(12) Kravic (16) Williams (12) and Crockett (20), marking the second-straight
game Tech has finished with four different players in double-digits
Red Raiders shot 36.1% from the field in the first half, but
followed up that performance by shooting 57.6% from the field in the second
half
Tech forced 25 turnovers and scored 33 points off of those
turnovers, while Jackson State was only able to force 18 turnovers and score
just 16 points off those mistakes
Now Tech turns its attention to No. 9 Arizona (3-0) as the
Wildcats roll into Lubbock on Saturday with first tip set for 8 p.m. inside the
United Spirit Arena. This marks the first time the Red Raiders will face a
nationally-ranked opponent in nonconference play since December 3, 2009, when
Tech defeated then-No.12 Washington in overtime, 99-92.
