Melvin makes Swift decision

Four-star forward Melvin Swift decided to end his recruitment early.

Four-star class of 2014 forward Melvin Swift didn't need much time before making his college decision. The Houston (Tex.) Yates high school power forward is now off the board and will be headed to Xavier.

This week Xavier assistant coach Ashley Howard made a trip down to Houston to check on Melvin Swift, and it didn't take long for a commitment to come.

"Melvin and his mother decided on Xavier this morning," said Yates assistant coach Jawann McClellan.

At 6-foot-7 Swift is one of the best athletes in the country, and McClellan says he will bring a lot to the floor for the Musketeers.

"The first thing he brings is athleticism," said McClellan. "His athleticism is way above average and his skill set is getting better every day. He can play the three now which is always a plus. Melvin has to keep working on his skill every day, but his athleticism is his best asset. I think the sky is the limit for him."

Schools such as Baylor, Texas A&M, and LSU had shown interest in Swift, but he and his mother liked the small atmosphere that Xavier provided.

"In talking to his mom he liked that the school is small and academic wise it is very intriguing with 100 percent graduation rate of their four year players," said McClellan.

Currently Swift is rated as the No. 63 player in the 2014 class and he is the first commitment for the Musketeers.
