Meeting the team: defensive player No. 21

OU backup free safety Quentin Hayes

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is getting closer to the end of the getting you acquainted special with this defensive member.

Player: Quentin Hayes

Hometown: Lancaster, Texas

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Height & Weight: 6-foot, 181 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup free safety

The rundown: After being suspended indefinitely for nearly three months, head coach Bob Stoops reinstated him on the roster Wednesday. Prior to all that drama, Hayes participated in three games a year ago, mostly in a special teams role. He picked up three tackles, one each against Missouri, Texas and Kansas. Hayes arrived on campus and redshirted in 2010 after emerging as a three-star Scout.com recruit.

Expectations for 2012: Now that he's back on the roster, Hayes is an almost certain two-deep backup to Tony Jefferson at the free position. He'll see some playing time in the defensive backfield this year because defensive coordinator Mike Stoops will like to be more flexible with how he uses his secondary. And he'll also be back in the special teams department once again, too.
