Meeting the team: defensive player No. 20

OU starting free safety Tony Jefferson

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is getting closer to the end of the getting you acquainted special with this defensive member.

Player: Tony Jefferson

Hometown: Chula Vista, Calif.

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 5-foot-11, 212 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Starting free safety

The rundown: Jefferson returns coming off a season where he led the team with four interceptions, including an OU record three in one contest against Ball State. He also had the team's third leading tackle total, where he recorded 74 stops. That included 7.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 of which were sacks. Jefferson earned honorable mention All-Big 12 by the AP and Coaches with those marks.

Expectations for 2012: Breakout season would be an understatement prediction for the member of the Sooner Cali trio. He could easily be the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and challenge for the Jim Thorpe Award presented to the nation's best defensive back. All of this, of course, is more available this year for him because of his shift from nickel to free safety in the new defense.
