Meeting the team: defensive player No. 11

OU backup defensive end Chaz Nelson

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated presents yet another day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Chaz Nelson

Hometown: Columbus, Ohio

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-2, 239 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup defensive end

The rundown: Nelson signed and came to Norman for spring ball after a pair of years at Garden City Community College where he was a big time playmaker. There, he had a number of honors, including the 2011 Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team NJCAA All-American. He did so by racking up 96 tackles, including 15.5 for loss and 9.5 sacks. Nelson threw in four forced fumbles, equal as many pass breakups and a pick-six to go along with that.

Expectations for 2012: Head coach Bob Stoops has high hopes of Nelson being an impact player this year. So, despite the depth at the position, he really has a chance to provide a major lift to this defensive line. He should be disruptive and see the field plenty, though definitely not in a starting role. As mentioned, he has a full spring under his belt, so he should be acclimated to the system by now and ready to roll.
