Meeting the team: defensive player No. 8

OU reserve defensive tackle Marquis Anderson

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated continues to roll on with getting you acquainted to the defense.

Player: Marquis Anderson

Hometown: Cibolo, Texas

Class: Redshirt freshman

Height & Weight: 6-foot-3, 265 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup defensive tackle

The rundown: The former U.S. Army All-American Bowl member and three-star Scout.com recruit redshirted last season after arriving for spring ball in 2011. Now, it's time for his first active year and he has done some shedding in the offseason to get prepared for that. Anderson lost 12 pounds since the spring and that should benefit him by getting off the ball quicker.

Expectations for 2012: He has a long list of guys in front of him and won't be on the two deep to start the season. That'll consist of starters Jamarkus McFarland and Casey Walker, plus reserves Stacy McGee and Jordan Phillips. Still, Anderson has the potential to be a really good player and could see the field and start towards that path this year. Sooner fans should look for his number to get called at least in reserve times but nothing major production-wise.
