Meeting the team: defensive player No. 6

OU backup defensive tackle Stacy McGee

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the sixth day getting you acquainted with the defense.

Player: Stacy McGee

Hometown: Muskogee, Okla.

Class: Redshirt senior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-4, 299 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Backup defensive tackle

The rundown: There should be a star next to backup for this guy because he's basically a third starter in this rotation which includes Jamarkus McFarland and Casey Walker, along with Jordan Phillips to likely round out the two-deep. In fact, McGee got the nod to start in 11 of 14 games back in 2010 and three last season. He recorded 3.5 tackles for loss each year with 26 and 22 tackles in 2010 and 2011, respectively. McGee, who played in all but one Sooner game last year, finished with 1.5 sacks, one of which came in a stunning 41-38 loss to Texas Tech.

Expectations for 2012: As mentioned, McGee may be a backup by name, but he's a potential impact player for this defense. Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops and OU have high hopes of this defense returning to its stingy, stifling reputation, and the defensive tackle rotation has a lot to do with whether or not that transpires. That means McGee has to step up, even if he's behind both McFarland and Walker and alongside Phillips. He'll see plenty of playing time and be expected to get into the backfield and be disruptive. Similar numbers as last year shouldn't be that hard to reach, and it'll be demanded of him.
