Meeting the team: offensive player No. 11

OU offensive tackle Derek Farniok

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated now presents the 11th day getting you acquainted with the team.

Player: Derek Farniok

Hometown: Sioux Falls, S.D.

Class: Redshirt freshman

Height & Weight: 6-foot-9, 325 pounds

Likely position on fall depth chart: Reserve right tackle

The rundown: After arriving as a three-star prospect coming out of Washington High School, Farniok redshirted last year to develop a year in the system before taking the field. He used that to really impress the coaching staff during spring ball. Players were quoted as saying he was a fearless worker and centers/guards coach James Patton said he was doing so while getting a lot of reps.

Expectations for 2012: Farniok is facing an uphill climb to get much playing time this year, but that doesn't mean he can't make an impact. And the way he competed in the spring should be an indication of that. It's a frequently used cliché, but depth is paramount. This big bruiser is a guy that gives the Sooners that depth. Beyond that, any experience this year will be crucial down the line as Farniok becomes a starter later in his career.
