NORMAN, Okla. — The Sooners missed on major target Max Browne and before that missed on target…
Sooners Illustrated roundup: May 8
A long awaited offer: Colleyville Heritage HS quarterback Cody Thomas has been hoping for an offer ever since visiting the Sooners on their second junior day. That one finally came for the 6-foot-5, 220-pound signal caller Monday evening when head coach Bob Stoops called him up and offered him a scholarship. No doubt, Sammamish (Wash.) HS quarterback Max Browne was OU's first wish, and they waited around to offer Thomas, but he's now got it. The 10th ranked quarterback in the country threw for nearly 3,400 yards and 34 touchdowns last year, completing 259-of-424 passes. He also has offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida International, Michigan State, Mississippi, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oregon, TCU, Texas Tech, USC, Vanderbilt and Virginia, but the Sooners figure to have a really good shot with the dual-sport QB. Two transfers turn to Norman: The first of two to commit to OU through transfer was defensive back Cortez Johnson. He played last season at Arizona, starting a pair of games and playing in eight. Johnson recorded 16 tackles, including 0.5 for loss and a pass breakup. The 6-foot, 200-pound DB visited Friday, committed then and is set to arrive in June. The Sooners didn't stop there, though. Fresno State wide receiver Jalen Saunders elected to join the Crimson and Cream also. In playing all 13 games last year, Saunders led the team with 1,065 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, finishing second on the club with 50 catches. He ranked third in the WAC with his receiving yardage total and fourth at 81.9 yards per game. Both must sit out the 2012 season per NCAA transfer rules and will be available for the 2013 season. 2013 commit list climbs to six: Union HS defensive end/offensive tackle Dalton Rodriguez became the latest Sooner pledge when he officially gave his verbal Saturday. Tulsa East Central HS cornerback Stanvon Taylor committed the night before. Those two join defensive ends D.J. Ward and Matt Dimon and running backs Keith Ford and Greg Bryant as the six current members of the 2013 class. Kameel Jackson leaving OU: Jackson announced his intentions to transfer from OU to Texas A&M on his Twitter Sunday evening. But the Aggies have not communicated with Jackson and his transfer there is up in the air. However, this much is certain: he'll not be at OU in the fall. The to-be sophomore finished the 2011 campaign with 12 receptions for 165 yards, playing in 11 games and starting two. Several 2014's are receiving OU interest: One of those is Manvel HS tight end Koda Martin. Martin just earned his first scholarship offer from former Big 12 school Colorado Tuesday afternoon, and the Sooners are now talking to him as well. Manvel HS head coach Kirk Martin informed Sooners Illustrated that Stoops had a one-on-one with Koda inside his office the day of the spring game, so there is serious interest. A couple of Kansas linemen are on OU's radar as well. Olathe South Senior HS offensive lineman Braden Smith, a 6-foot-6, 278-pound beast, already boasts a Sooner offer, and they're really going after him early in his recruitment. Smith holds 12 offers, including ones from Ohio State and Nebraska, among others. Defensive end Peyton Newell, while he only has offers from Iowa and TCU to this point, is also on OU's radar. Expect things to ramp up for the lineman who recorded 76 tackles, including 26 for loss and six sacks last fall. Total 2014 offer list has risen to five: Along with Smith, four others already have OU offers on the table. Just about a week ago, Salpointe Catholic (Ariz.) HS wide receiver Cameron Denson got his. Mansfield Timberview (Texas) HS cornerback Edward Paris also has a Sooner offer, as do Woodbridge (Va.) HS defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand and Bamberg Ehrhardt (S.C.) HS middle linebacker Kevin Crosby. Follow me at twitter.com/joeyhelmer10 or facebook.com/joeyhelmer.
