NORMAN, Okla. — Former Sooner star slot receiver and all-time NCAA receptions leader Ryan Broyles worked out Thursday morning in front of scouts from 12 different NFL franchises at Oklahoma’s Everest Training Center and showcased the progress he’s made in his recovery.

Broyles clocked a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash, off his typical mid-4.4 time before the injury but an improvement from 4.59 in his first try on the day.

Still, that’s to be anticipated coming off anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, an encouraging sign for the speedster.

“I feel like today I showed up and showed I’ve been working hard,” Broyles said. “I have definitely been timing well. The scouts said the same thing. They don’t expect me to be full speed and I don’t expect the same. Being competitive, I wish it was in the 4.3 range. That’s not the scenario. It just shows that I am working hard. I am getting my lateral movement back as well.”

He demonstrated that by running a set of six passing routes.

His cuts on those routes were fluid and as close to normal as could be anticipated.

So much so that the scouts decided to call it a day after just the six routes.

“I wanted to keep it going,” Broyles said. “I have been working for months doing all my routes. So for them to cut it short shows that they have respect for me as a ball catcher. I have been working for it. I have been working hard these past few months just to show that I am a competitor. I am going to compete. I am going to be ready for camp. I am on my way.”

Broyles has been working out in Norman since the NFL Combine.

Prior to that, he spent some time in southern California fine-tuning his game during the recovery process.

As for this day, in addition to the 40-yard dash, he also leaped 32.5 inches in the vertical jump, while weighing in at 188 pounds, the same playing weight he had as a senior at OU last fall.

Now, it’s just about continuing to get full strength, seeing where he lands in the upcoming NFL Draft and preparing for fall camp after that.

Broyles, who said he’ll watch the draft with family and friends, just wanted to add one more thing for those out there:

“I won’t be bringing any baggage along, so I’m just looking forward to the future.”
