Cornerback Gary Simon, out of Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., sent his national letter of intent to OU at 9:13 a.m. and officially became a Sooner at that point, selecting the Sooners over other suitors such as Iowa State and Arkansas.
He’s one of three signees and four commits--tight end Laith Harlow is still pending due to his injury--from the state of Florida in this class.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound corner who visited OU a couple weeks ago, rejoins his former high school teammate and JUCO offensive guard Will Latu, who signed just minutes later.
He also serves to help shore up the depth in a secondary that was raked game after game for big plays and chunks of yardage.
He’ll immediately find himself amongst a competition with guys like Demontre Hurst, Gabe Lynn, fellow signees Kass Everett and Zack Sanchez and others at the cornerback position.
Simon arrives as a three-star prospect and the 60th ranked cornerback in the 2012 class, but many believe he could be a major steal for the Crimson and Cream.
