OU vs. Iowa State Postgame: Breaking It Down

OU defensive back Tony Jefferson

NORMAN, Okla. — The No. 9 Sooners held serve at home in the home finale with a 26-6 victory, and Sooners Illustrated now digs deeper into it.

Game ball goes to: OU defense—There are several worthy recipients, so it goes to the entire defense. Defensive back Tony Jefferson had an outstanding game with seven tackles, including two for loss and a sack, while defensive end Frank Alexander recorded six tackles, including one for loss to go along with a forced fumble and quarterback hurry. Linebacker Travis Lewis had a crucial interception as well as three tackles.

Play of the game: With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, Iowa State quarterback Jared Barnett dropped back to pass, but his throw was tipped by linebacker Tom Wort and picked by linebacker Travis Lewis, who took it to the house. The return was nullified by a block in the back, but Lewis' effort to return it back, plus the timing of the play, with ISU in OU territory, is why it's biggest one of the game.

It was over when: Iowa State muffed the final kickoff in the first half, and Sooner place kicker Michael Hunnicutt made the Cyclones pay by cashing it into three points. Hunnicutt's 37-yarder upped the OU lead to 23-6 at the time, a seemingly insurmountable deficit for ISU with their stagnant offense.

Surprise of the game:Iowa State snuffed out the Bellcat formation on several occasions. They held quarterback Blake Bell and the Sooners on a couple third downs and picked him off in the end zone.

The biggest thing we learned: Bedlam will, indeed, be for the Big 12 crown. An OU win will force a three-way tie, while an Oklahoma State when will give the Cowboys the outright title.

The biggest concern: Ball control: Running back Roy Finch fumbled once and Bell threw his interception, good for a pair of turnovers on the afternoon. The Sooners can't do that next week against quarterback Brandon Weeden, wide receiver Justin Blackmon and the OSU offense, because they'll make them pay.

Streak count: 13 straight victories over the Cyclones dating back to 1990
