Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 7

OU starting field corner Demontre Hurst

NORMAN, Okla. — Sooners Illustrated is now in the final week of the most crucial defensive players countdown.

No. 7:

Player: Demontre Hurst

Position: Starting field corner

The rundown: Hurst is the first Sooner on the countdown to have started all 14 games a year ago. As a sophomore, he finished second on the team with 11 passes broken up and recorded his first career interception against Utah State, running it back 49 yards. Hurst also racked up 50 tackles, including four for loss, and forced three fumbles. The year before, he played in 13 games, mostly in a special teams role, where he ranked fourth of the team with nine tackles. He finished with 14 total tackles that year, including a 15-yard sack in the Red River Rivalry.

Expectations for 2011: As productive as he was a year ago, expect him to be that and then some this year. Hurst will be a significant part of this secondary and a piece the Sooners can ill-afford to lose. He will be in the starting rotation at corner for every game, given he stays healthy. That said, Sooner Nation should expect double-digit PBU's and major leadership out of this guy.
