There is about a month to go before the start of the 2011 high school football season kicks off and Breyun Owens begins his junior season as a Warrior. Owens started on the offensive line last year as a sophomore for SGP.
The 6-foot-3 and 290-pound prospect is also an impressive wrestler where he qualified for the state tournament this past year.
Despite the fact of how early it is in his recruitment Owens already has a top five list of schools that covers a variety of different programs. Owens will be able to check out one of this top five schools on July 29th at North Texas for their Friday Night Lights event and he is hoping for an offer.
"Right now I'm really looking hard at UNT," Owens began. "Depending on how well I do at the Friday Night Lights camp depends on if I get an offer or not. But right now it's looking well for me, I hope so. I already have an offer from Northeastern State University. My top five colleges, Hawaii, UNT, Princeton, OU and Duke."
Hearing the talk about North Texas seems like Owens could possibly commit if he received an offer but is he seriously considering committing this early?
"If they offer me I'm going to hold out," Owens stated. "By the end of the summer of my junior year I do plan to be committed but I'm not going to make any hasty decisions at all. I will counsel with my parents and my coaches and people that know me well and know the system well so that I don't make a choice that I am going to regret."
The Oklahoma Sooners are in Owens list of top five schools but Owens says since childhood he has been a Sooner fan.
"Even from childhood I was always a Sooners fan, a raving Sooners fan. So that was always my top choice and when I did get the athletic ability to possibly go there it made it all the better."
The Sooners have shown Owens some interest so far and have been by SGP to check out Owens in person.
"A little bit but not much," Owens said about interest from the Sooners. "They came out to practice to check out me and a couple of our other players."
Owens is looking to major in Therapy and Kinesiology which will play a major factor in where he decides to go to college.
"I kind of want to get away from home that is why I am hesitating on UNT. I kind of want to go (away) a little bit so I can branch out and kind of experience things and also to get my education. If they don't have the major that I am looking for then it's not going to happen," Owens explained.
Last season South Grand Prairie made it to the first round of the Texas 5A State Playoffs but were eliminated by the Trinity Trojans. This year though Owens feels that if his team sticks together that no one can contend with the Warriors.
"I believe that we are going to have the strongest and best team that we've had since I have been playing (at South Grand Prairie)," Owens said. "I'm really excited about our season. I believe in our program and our coaches so as long as we keep that and everyone on our team is in the same system (mindset) then no one can stand infront of us."
Owens looks to be one of the top offensive lineman in the state of Texas for the 2013 class. Stay with Sooners Illustrated for more coverage on Owens moving forward.
