Why Bedlam Part II Is Crucial

OU guard Cade Davis

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooners need this Bedlam game on Saturday for a number of reasons, and not just because it's against rival Oklahoma State.

3. Senior Night--Granted, OU has only one senior, but it would be nice if, after such a long season, guard Cade Davis got to walk off the court at Lloyd Noble Center for the final time a winner. Davis was a part of that Elite Eight run led by Blake Griffin back in 2009, so he's experienced success at OU. But after that, the past two years have been rough. He deserves a win in his final game as a Sooner.

2. To avoid another huge conference losing streak into next year--Let's face it: The Sooners will likely lose their opening round game in the Big 12 Tournament, which means if they don't defeat the Cowboys, they'll be looking at a 10-game losing skid to open the 2011-12 conference season. That dreaded program record conference losing streak the Sooners so narrowly avoided this year could then be an obstacle again next season. Certainly, that's not the type of pressure a team or program wants when opening up the conference slate.

1. Head coach Jeff Capel's job security--This isn't exactly a topic I ever like to bring up, but the reality of this one is paramount. After winning four straight earlier in the season, the chances were 99 percent that Capel would get at least another year, maybe two. That one percent chance he wouldn't was if his squad suffered a huge losing skid similar to last year's and not only that, but also if they did so without fight and pride. Wednesday night against Texas Tech, they showed absolutely no fight at all in losing their eighth straight on the hardwood, and frankly, they lacked a sense of pride for the University of Oklahoma. A Bedlam loss for Capel could be devastating because of this.
