OU vs. Texas Preview Special: Part IV

OU defensive end Jeremy Beal

Sooners Illustrated brings the three defensive keys to defeating Texas.

Three defensive keys:

1. Prevent the big play--The biggest problem so far for the OU defense has been giving up the big play, both in the passing and the running game. Against Texas, the Sooners can ill-afford to allow those huge game-changing plays. That is the main reason opponents have racked up the amounts of yardage and have had the type of success they have against the Sooner defense.

2. Get pressure on UT quarterback Garrett Gilbert--Gilbert has proven his vulnerability early in the season, throwing as many picks (four) as touchdowns so far this year. If defensive end Jeremy Beal and the rest of the Sooner front four can get him out of his comfort zone by dialing up some good blitz packages early, he will make some mistakes in this contest. That has to be a point of emphasis for the Sooner defense.

3. Tackle fundamentally--OU was poor last week with its technique tackling, and luckily for the Sooners, they made enough plays to get by. But if the Sooners have a repeat performance this time around with poor tackling, the Longhorns will make them pay for it. OU must be sound here.
